I'm bringing this thread back from the dead, mostly because I want to do the same thing. I have an 80' and would love to have a set of side pipes on it. The pictures posted here look great. For those of you who went with hooker pipes, what insert if any did you use and what finish did you go with? Also what mods to the rocker did you do?
I have Hooker stainless steel with Max Flow inserts. One of the primaries was real close to the steering box so I gave it a little "ding" with a prybar for some clearance. Drivers side rocker panel was good, passenger side needed to be trimmed to clear the primaries at the front. Also, I had to extend the slots forward for the side tube mounting "T" bolts.
Very cool Mike! The car looks and sounds great, plus I live in NJ too and know those roads well! Before we had kids my wife and I went to Lambertville and New Hope a lot.
Anyways, did you need to mod your rocker panels at all, they look to be intact.

Thanks! That's cool. Had our wedding in Lambertville.
Just trimmed the lower front of the right rocker panel to clear the pipes on mine.
Do you think side pipes could help lower the interior temps??? On our 81 both pipes run directly under the passenger side heating the floor. Just a thought??? Al
It probably does, but the sill plates do get warm. My "69 factory side pipe car has added insulation between the body and frame to control that somewhat.
Ha Ha, Just noticed the date on the orignal post!

To: Texasbaehr & qwank, Do you have any more info on the mufler type you used under the fiber glass cover, Years ago i put a 4 foot glass packs in a 74. Wondering if theres anything better, I have the same thing in a 78 now and looking for what to use that will sound good but wont be crazy load, Thanks E
I could only find these up to 1974.....did you have to modify?
Bolted right up too the stock SS tube headers on the 81. They will also bolt up to the iron headers on an 80. The 75- 82 do not have the slotted holes in the frame for the mounts. You have to get creative mounting to the frame. I used some 1/4" self drilling screws to mount the mufflers and the mounting hardware for the fiberglass covers. Been on there about a year and no issues. Sound is awesome. Many people think its a BB when I pull up.

Side pipe Kit was purchased from Corvette Central. Offered in Aluminized and SS pipes. Mufflers are made by Sweet Thunder. Its loud at idle and acceleration but tolerable at cruise.
