Default Speedo Question

The speedometer in our '77 has not worked since we purchased the car last fall, but it has been in progress and not driven more then a few blocks for test drives until this week.

On the way to have new tires put on last Thursday, movement in the speedo caught my eye. I noticed when I took off from a stoplight that it actually worked in first gear up until about 20mph or so, then would fall back to zero. It did this a few times. I did not notice movement as my speeds increased, but I was watching the road and didn't really pay attention closely at speed.

Is it possible the speedo is just dirty or something?

oh - the car is a 4spd, single cable from trans to dash. The gear in the trans is in good shape (rebuilt the transmission last fall). The outside casing of the cable is not in the best shape where it connects to the trans, but did appear to spin freely when it was apart.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,
Adam

Inner cable could be broken and the two ends rub together enough at low speeds to give a reading.

Disconnect it from the trans and hook a drill onto it and see if it works that way and at what speeds

I'm not sure on the one piece cables but you may be able to pull the inner cable out and check the condition

Hey Mooser,

Ahh... that hadn't crossed my mind. Great thought! Guess I'll be climbing back under this thing

Thanks!

Will do Rogman. I'm going to try and get my lazy butt out there today and see what I can find.
