Unless the previous owner or owners put a five speed in your 76', there isn't a five speed there. You didn't specify whether or not it was an automatic or manual, but these cars came with either three speed autos (TH350) or four speed transmissions and it's likely a Saginaw. To convert your shifter, you're going to have to remove the old shifter and install the factory four speed shifter or automatic shifter, along with the shifter rods or cables, depending on the application.
