Default 1968 steering wheel question

i'm restoring a 68' BB coupe.....is the teak wheel standard in 68', or was the simulated walnut also available? all of the 1968 corvette options info i have found so far don't list steering wheel options. so i am a bit confused. thanks, Rick

Rick. It's plastic with no optional wheel available. Teak was offered as an option up until the 1966 model year and not offered in 67.

I agree. In 68 there was only one steering wheel offered, the simulated walnut. It was the same wheel for the 67 though some 67 gurus think the grain was slightly different. I kinda doubt it though.

Plastic "simulated wood" 16" wheel with about a 3" dish is what it was in the 68's. Here's a pic of mine before I swapped it out.

Razman, the smartest thing that you can do, is remove the HUGE 67 plastic wheel and buy a 69-76 repo black rubber 14" steering wheel. Your right thigh will really appreciate it. That is the first thing that I changed on my 68 coupe... 40 years ago. Lou.

Default Correct steering wheel for my 68?

My 68 BB has a black vinyl "basketweave" interior, and the steering wheel in there is a very worn black plastic. The data plate on it says the interior is "STD". Is black the correct steering wheel for this car? I ask because of the earlier response that says all 68s had simulated walnut. Thanks!

Mine is not simulated anything; rather it is real plastic.

See azza2u. There was only one steering wheel for the 68 models; 16" plastic. You are being kind if you say it is "simulated" wood. In good light, it might actually look like wood - kinda sorta a little maybe. Mostly it's brown plastic. Anything else in a 68 is a non-stock replacement.

Please read my above post. Buy a 68 wheel, for originality, BUT if you really plan to drive the car, get the black rubber 14" wheel. An original, 68 plastic wheel looks like..... cheap plastic and is not comfortable to hold in your hands. It is only six screws to change it back, if you need to, to show the car, ect. Lou.

Lou, do you have a pic or a recommendation where to get the black rubber 14" wheel?
Thanks, Jeff

I wouldn't have it any other way, .....I also have a 66 GS Riviera and a 67 SS Camaro with the OE simulated wood wheels......To me, a touch of class in a otherwise dull interior with out the Woodies.......

Smaller wheel, go on a diet!........

Thanks Lou. I found a decent one from Willcox (X2502) that I'm about to order. Agree that the black plastic stock one looks inferior and not that comfortable.. Need to drive in comfort and style. Thanks again!
