I've been playing around with the Audi style (well, everything has them now) DRL in various configurations
I think Paul74 had his DRL in the marker/turn signals. (maybe not, his would be amber too)
Were you thinking on replacing the front turn signals or ???
I built a set of LED halo headlights earlier this year, and put them through a long term test over the summer. They look awesome! Each headlight has 96 LEDs, they are extremely bright, even during the day. I use them as my DRLs with the headlights down. They turned out so well that I am currently almost finished building a set of LED halo tail lights
I had that system on my 1974 for three years. It worked very well but unfortunately the control module failed last summer. Strangely they no longer will ship to Canada as well?? It only takes five minutes to fill out the customs form....
For spring I will probably do something along the lines of Mooser's work.

IIRC, the 1157 bulb's turn signal element is typically a bit brighter than its running light element. You could have someone hold the brake pedal down with the flashers on to see if that's bright enough. (You might be surprised.)
Thing is, they'd probably burn out before too long with continuous use, and I'm not sure whether or not having them on for long periods might create heat issues either within the lamp, socket or wiring.
Fortunately, there are probably some very bright LED replacements of suitable quality for the 1157 out there, but I don't happen to know which to recommend at the moment. ...or what flasher modules you'd need with them.
Kind of like redman76's setup above, I used a set of 55w PIAA 1400 Dichroic Fog lights mounted behind the grills adjacent to the park/turn lamps. I like this set up because it's bright & the tail lights are not on so when you hit the brakes during daylight its more obvious to the person behind you.

Set of those high-intensity LED, water-resistant strips. 12v and originally meant for under-cabinet work.
They draw minimal amps and oddly enough the spacing works almost perfectly for the grill.
Tried a few different configurations
They make a set of smaller LED's that aren't quite as bright, these seem pretty good without using reflectors
Now that I've decided on a shape I'll make up some brackets and mount them over the winter. Right now they are just taped to the head-light guards (The strips have 3M foam tape on them)
