I’m about done putting my ’68 convertible back together, and I realized that I have two small brackets left over. They came off the car long ago, and I cleaned them up and even shot a little black paint on them, but I have no idea where they go. I’m guessing front or rear bumper, but I’m stumped. I’m not able to find them in my assembly manual. Anyone have any ideas?
I believe they hang either on the wall of your garage or from the rearview mirror … toss those fuzzy dice out the window and replace them with these babies.
If that’s all you have left, you have done a lot better than I ever did with any of my restorations!
GM had to add a lot of support brackets to the 68's. The fiberglass would crack from all of the unsupported weight of the headlight heavy nose. They had to add these twist brackets, the two triangle shaped brackets on top of the inner fenders, and most 68's did not have the center nose rod down to the radiator support. They also added two channel braces to the frames rear "kick-up" area. Lou.
That sort of thing happens to me all the time. When I'm working on mechanical stuff I aim to have less than 5% of the parts I started with leftover after re-assembly - then I figure I've got it.
You shouldn't be embarrassed that you missed those brackets. You should be proud that you restored your Vette!!!
Yea 68vxm I agree with A7X. However, let me share the embarrassment with you. I just installed an entire one piece front clip this summer without ever installing these brackets. I thought they were for the rear bumpers (that are not installed yet). I shimmed the gap where these brackets go thinking that the gap was due to the new front clip not lining up which is a common problem with them.
Thanks to your post, I can now get my collective shi# together.
