Changing fuel pump on a 82?

Changing fuel pump on a 82?
My fuel pump is getting weak in my 82 so I'm going to replace it with a 86' unit, but my question is is it best to change it with little gas in the tank or full? I'm just concerned about fumes in my heated garage.

Warm the shop up, shut the furnace off, and get busy.
Full will have less airspace for vapors to build up in the tank, but if it's warm the vapors will still come out of the tank and fall to the lowest level.
