I've spoken with a few members on here and other Vette owners around the St. Louis area. Apparently all of us have, at one time or another, regardless of age or social status, have been accused of overcompensating, which I find quite amusing listening to their stories.
With me driving a lifted H2 Hummer and an old Vette in the garage, I seem to have a bulls-eye painted on me. My Hummer has now been nicknamed 'The Overcompensator 4000' by co-workers and friends in our Cub Scout Pack.
Anyone have any good stories? Any sharp or witty comebacks?? Whatcha got???
Sorry no sharp or witty come backs but I think the small minded people whom say things like that really don't like themselves and feel their lives are crap so they TRY to feel better about themselves by saying something is wrong with you - I say F%*kem, enjoy what you have and be proud of it

Reason: change wording
I've owned 3 Corvettes over the years, as well as other nice cars, and have been the target of comments similar to that. Usually those comments come from people who cannot afford nice cars (and wish they could). I could personally careless what they think. Tell them to stick with their sewing, meanwhile you have your own hobby, and its cars.
Oh I don't let it get to me at all. It's just funny to hear the comments. I just turned 40 and have been a car guy since about 12, and everyone that knows me or my family, or even drives by our house knows this.
I tell those that say something about me overcompensating that they must subscribe to mine and my wife's website for $29.95 per month like everyone else to put their own personal inadequacies & suspicions to rest. No one joins for free.
I think a lot of it is what Airborne & htown said.
I just tell them I'm like my car. I have a big nose and nearly no tail end.
As for the midlife crisis thing... When I bought my vette and first face the question, I said it's been an all life crisis. I'd have bought the car at 16 if I had the money.
do they have fancy jewelry, have a new car, fancy cloths, exotic vacations? buy their kid that 500$ baseball bat, or hockey stick, or ballerina outfit? that is overcompensating. just throwing money down the drain.. classic cars on the other hand, at least hold their value.

I like that! An ALL life crisis! My wife kids me about that, now I know what to say.
Well, thats it!!! Your 40! You must have a mid life crisis.... I've been told this SOOO Many times. I've been in mid life crisis since the age of 21! That's when I got my first vette. When I got a Harley, I was told the same thing!! People need to put a name on you. They don't understand it's a hobby/love thing. The rest are just "haters". Who cares, as long as you and the family are happy and enjoy it, so be it!!!
I remember when I was 17 and admiring a full dressed Harley, thinking that I could never see the day that I could own something like that because they cost like $5000 back then. Now I own several Harleys and 3 Vettes. I worked for them. It's not compensation. It's an undying desire.
