I fitted a new sealed Halogen beam head light to my 79 as the existing one had blown But as soon as i turned it on the head light filled with smoke and the light started going dull Thinking it may be a faulty light i fitted a second light same thing happened
Are they really old stock or 6 volt? If other lights such as dash, dome, tail etc are burned out, then you have a faulty voltage regulator.
If not, it's most likely bad headlights. Try it with the car not running. Screwed up wiring or not, you can't make more than what the battery puts out.
I once had four new headlights all blow within 30 seconds of turning them on. They were over 30 years old and I believe air managed to get inside. Installed brand new bulbs and never had an issue.
