Default Recommended wheels?

Hello all! Just got my first Stingray!!

I ended up with a 74 automatic L48. The bad thing is that some joker swapped out the wheels for some ugly off-brand rims at some point, so, I'm looking to buy a set of reproduction rally rims.

I'm confused about the differences on some of the websites, though. On Ecklers, they include paint, like they need to be painted?? But on JC Whitney the ad shows that they are chrome.

Can anyone recommend a good set? Also, I'm looking to get the reproduction wheel caps.

I found these on Ecklers:

And I found these on JC Whitney:

Under that trim ring is a steel rim that is painted gray.
There are also the same style rally rim that are chrome instead of paint , all a matter of taste i guess.

There is no need to purchase off shore reproduction wheels. You can advertise anywhere, including the Parts For Sale/Wanted section here, and get a set of original Corvette AZ coded 15x8 rally wheels with trim rings and center caps, all made in the US of A.

Check your spare. There should an AZ coded rally wheel in the tub.

Original Corvette rally wheels were painted argent silver, not chromed.

I have a 74 with factory rally wheels which I prefer but you could also look at the aluminium wheels that were supposed to be available but were pulled by gm and released for 1976 All the major suppliers carry them and in my opinion they look pretty sweet also good luck in your search

Thanks all - great suggestion on looking for OEM. I didn't realize they were so cheap and available!

I'm making some phone calls on the junkyard inventory websites now

Available, yes. Cheap could be a different thing altogether. Once upon a time, in a galaxy far, far away, you could get used rally wheels with rings and caps for about $50 each.

Put a Want To Buy post in the Parts For Sale section.

From past experience, definitely opt for original equipment (center caps, trim rings) and the only 'Vette I'd put anything from JC Whitney on is a Chevette. Stay away from that place.

My '72 had the same issue. Previous owner put a set of cheap 1980's looking American Racing wheels on it and got rid of my OEMs. So, after a few weeks, a found my wheels from one guy, then caps from one guy, and stainless trim rings from another. But they are all original and not reproductions. I have maybe $200 in my entire set.
Check out Craigslist also. Right now at CL in St. Louis, there are several ads:
Set of (4) blasted & primered wheels $100 (Argent silver paint is $8)
Set of (4) wheels, tires, caps and rings (all original) for $650

Deals are out there, just don't wast your $$ on reproductions.

Good luck!

I bought a 74 rolling chassis to replace my rotted out frame with. It came with original 74 rally wheels with like new rubber on them. Nice condition. No rings or caps.

I have no need for them but could use the money for other parts. Not sure where you are, I'm near Cleveland, OH. Let me know if your interested.

The rings are just aesthetics right? A shiny over-lay?

Ken's Corvettes in Canada (just North of NY) has a complete set (wheels, tires, rings and center caps) off a '73 for $450. Plus he ships from NY to save duty fees.
