Default Rocket Scientists

I found this little gem on the African Muscle Cars forum.....

Sometimes it DOES take a Rocket Scientist!! (true story)..

Scientists at Rolls Royce built a gun specifically to launch dead chickens at the windshields of airliners and military jets all travelling at maximum velocity.

The idea is to simulate the frequent incidents of collisions with airborne fowl to test the strength of the windshields.

American engineers heard about the gun and were eager to test it on the Windshields of their new high speed trains.

Arrangements were made, and a gun was sent to the American engineers.

When the gun was fired, the engineers stood shocked as the chicken hurled out of the barrel, crashed into the shatterproof shield, smashed it to smithereens, blasted through the control console, snapped the engineer's back-rest in two and embedded itself in the back wall of the cabin like an arrow shot from a bow..

The horrified Yanks sent Rolls Royce the disastrous results of the experiment, along with the designs of the windshield and begged the British scientists for suggestions.

You're going to love this......

Rolls Royce responded with a one-line memo:

"Defrost the chicken first."

LOL, after that first line I really expected a very rude fried chicken joke there.
Defrost the chicken, Hilarious

Rolls-Royce has a long-standing reputation for this sort of humor. Many decades ago there was a story whereby a certain Rolls owner whose Silver ________ had broken a crankshaft. He had the engine disassembled and put the broken crank in a crate and sent it back to Crewe along with a check for a replacement crank. Some days later he received his crate back with a new crankshaft, the uncashed check, and a letter explaining that "Rolls-Royce crankshafts do not break"...

Yeah.
Many years ago, my cousin worked for Fairchild Republic, in Long Island, NY. They made the A10 "Warthog" tank killing aircraft. They used a chicken cannon to fire dead chickens at the windscreens to test them.

That joke has been around at least since the 70's and I'm sure much earlier. I'm surprised to see how it's changed over the years where now Rolls Royce supposedly makes cannons and gets involved with testing windshields.

The original version was an American aircraft engine manufacturer asking fellow engine manufacturer Rolls Royce for advice about bird ingestion tests. The answer came back 'thaw the bird first'.

In England the joke was the other way around with the Brits asking the Yanks for advice.

This is what a duck did to a TF34 off the Cali coast a couple months ago...

The duck was NOT frozen. Hit fan spinner, which came off and exploded through the side of the fan duct. Very messy...
