I opened this '79 rear the other day and noticed what looks to be gear markings on the posi unit. Frtom the picture you can see what I mean around the outside of the unit parallel to the ring gear. I have never looked at one of these before so is it normal or is something wrong?
That is generally what it looks like when the pinion gets loose from bad bearings or a loose pinion nut. it allows the pinion to ride backwards marking the gear case.
I would think the pinion gear is either loose now or it once was. The only thing is the markings are very consistant which would make me think the pinion gear is or was set up wrong, instead of being loose. If it was loose the markings would be sloppy looking. Just a guess.

It seemed odd that the markings were so consistent but as I said I do not know what it is supposed to look like.
yeah something was loose or let go at some point...likely pinion but I also have seen a case with similar marks when ring gear shredded and walked all over...who knows, but regardless things need to be checked out..
Take it to a shop the specializes in this. It would be cheap insurance to have it checked out, for peace of mind. If you suspect that the set-up has never been messed with, you need to have it looked at.

It's up for sale right now. I opened it just to see and that's what I found. If I find something to put it in I would definately have it rebuilt.
