Has anyone refinished the plastic trim that surrounds the inside of the rear window on a 79, or similar year? I have the trim out because I needed to repair the cargo shade, and want the trim look new again. I want it to look factory stock. I know I can just go pick up black interior dye, but want to make sure it's going to look correct. Any suggestions? I'm especially concerned about it being not the correct gloss.
Plastic? are you sure, mine is like a pressed particle board or similar, and you will need to continue the black around the top of the roll cage area which will require masking from the interior color of the car (mine's saddle). I should do mine soon too, I was going to use satin black or semi gloss black interior die on mine, it is pretty much what the factory used. Just go for it, it will look a lot better than it does now.
No one makes the package shelf new... and one issue with them is they become gummy over time (its like they gas out). If you paint them as they stand they will do the same through the new paint. I have good used re-conditioned here and I have the corners but the best bet for you.. refinish your original one and solve the gummy problem.
Take some lacquer thinner and some number three grade steel wool and scrub the top painted surface before painting and you should be able to pre-paint your original shelf.
I refinished the window trim(garnish moulding?)in all 4 of my Vettes, even tho they are all low mile cars.
Like mentioned, they were "sticky".
Used Zinzeer "stripfast" to remove the old sticky finish and thoroughly washed them.
Don't sand them as there is a slight texture to them you don't want to disturb.
If you have a spraygun, shoot it with flat rustoleum. Perfect look, dries to a slightly matte finish, not real flat.
Not sure how a spray can finish would look, tho.
"Don't sand them as there is a slight texture to them you don't want to disturb."
The NCRS judging manual calls it simulated leather texture surface.
Might want to look at Dupli-color Trim Paint. Says it is OEM flat black. I have used it on other parts and like the result. I haven't painted this molding but only applied Aerospace 303 to clean it up a bit.
