Hi, iam trying to find out info on my oil pressure gauge. I started the car and my oil pressure gauge pointer went over the scale and is sitting on the opposite side of the gauge.Does anyone know if the gauge is shot or it could be something else?...thanks
What was the oil pressure before you had this problem?
Could be stuck pressure relief valve in the oil pump?
Is the 80 model a mechanical or electric gauge, unlikely to be the gauge but you can always disconnect it at the engine if it is a mech one and temp substitute another gauge to see what the real pressure is. Probably not a good idea to drive it if the relief valve is stuck, just my opinion though, await a reply from one of the forum gurus on this:-)
Where is the needle pointing? Look at it and tell me if the needle is at the top of the face rivet or the bottom.. This is key to knowing what is causing the problem.
The oil pressure gauge on your car is identical to that of the fuel gauge except it has less resistance. So the answer to your question can be found on the fuel gauge video on my web site. http://willcoxcorvette.com/product_i...ducts_id=27604
If the ohms wire is off.. the gauge will peg to the top of the rivet.. so from what you posted I would check the wire and make sure it is on the sender...

Hi, it spun around i guess and I didnt notice but before I pulled it the pointer was at the 6 oclock.below the rivits. I had it in my hand there is no resistance on the pointer at all. It just spins all the way around in both directions.
without power the gauge needle will float randomly. You need to power up the gauge and do some testing.. Let me see if I can post you a pic that will help you.. it will be tomorrow.
Okay.. I know this says fuel gauge but you'll just have to trust me.. The oil pressure gauge works the same way.
If you run 12 volts to the stud marked power... and ground to the one marked ground.
Then look at the gauge and tell me what it reads.
Next.. with the same wires hooked up to the gauge as shown above.. take a wire and run it from the signal stud to the one marked ground. Then look at the gauge and tell me what it reads.
the first step with wires hooked up. pos to 12v terminal and ground to ground the gauge pointer goes to the right rivet.
the second step with adding a wire from the signal to ground the pointer goes to zero.
the first step with wires hooked up. pos to 12v terminal and ground to ground the gauge pointer goes to the right rivet.
the second step with adding a wire from the signal to ground the pointer goes to zero.
And this confirms there is no problem with the dash unit. Aside from me testing it for accuracy you have pasted the basic test which means your issue is not gauge related.
When the dash gauge was in the car.... was the reading you got with just positive and negative attached the same? (just above the rivet)? If so then it could be the printed circuit, the wire going to the circuit, one of the tabs on the printed circuit. Either way the ohms signal is not getting to the gauge.
I'll tell you if the sender is bad...
edit.. :forgot this was an oil pressure gauge.
If you can, put the cluster back together and plug in the printed circuit connector. With the key on what is the oil pressure gauge reading?
Now, pull the sending unit wire from the sender and see if the gauge pegs to the rivet again. Then ground the sender wire out and see if it goes to zero. If the dash unit functions just as prescribed above then the issue is the sending unit. If it performs differently then the issue is between the sender connector and the dash pinch connector.

Hi, with the key on the pressure gauge is pointing to the right rivit.
When I pull the plug off it stays on the right rivit.
I dont know which wire to ground out. Is it at the gauge or the sender unit under hood and if its at sender wire under hood which of the three wires do I ground out?
Ok.. well you got part of it right and probably enough.
With the key on the gauge is pointing at the rivet.. Same results as above when you powered the gauge up with positive and ground.
So.. The wire you need to test with is not in the console or dash.. it is in the engine compartment. In the picture below you'll see where the oil pressure sender is located. You need to pull that connector off and ground it out. If the gauge goes to zero with the key on then your issue is the sender and it will need to be replaced...
There should be three wires, tan/white, orange, and tan. The tan wire is the one that runs to the dash gauge. Ground that gauge out and see if the needle moves to empty.
