I do not have a key for the door locks on my 81. With a long distance road trip being planned for south Florida. I want to be able to lock the doors. How do I get a replacement key? Thanks in advace
Well, I called the dealer. No luck, they don't have a code program for C3's. Furthest back they go is 1989. Hopefully a locksmith can make one.
Take the door panel off the car, remove the lock cylinder and stamped on the side of it will be the key "Code". This is not the cut code but rather a reference code to the cut... Take that four letter code to any locksmith and he can cut one for you.
Will that same code be on the glovebox lock? I saw some numbers and letters on the side of it and its way easier to get to. I am in the same situation without door keys. Thanks!
For some reason, I don't think so
.
The lock cylinders, in the doors and ignition, will have a code like 04K6. This can be looked up in a book that will list the cutter depths.
IIRC, the glove box only has three tumblers and no proper key code stamping.
edit: Post (or PM me) the code on that lock and I can look it up.

Nope.. the code is on the door lock cylinders when they are original. Replacement cylinders in most cases will not have this code either.
if your factory alarm doesnt work or you never plan on using it, then buy new locks for $15 at local auto supply and swap them out. You can buy corvette locks there which are half the price than my local shop. The job isnt that difficult
Well I bought new lock set at parts store and it does not fit. The cylinders fit into the doors fine, but the shaft where the C-Clip goes is not the same and my old hardware will not fit onto it. Back to the store it goes.
Sorry about that. Take your old lock to the store and show them what you need. You got an earlier C3 lock that has a shorter shaft. They gave you the wrong lock. Trust me it will work, I have probably done about 20 sets on 79 to 82.
I'm going to try a different parts store after I return them. I'm sick of the deer in the headlights look I keep getting from the current store. I will report back with the correct part number/brand
Sorry for the slight hijack, but does the "code on the cylinder thing" hold true for other GM originally installed ignition, door, and trunk/gate locks with numbers on them? Especially for the rear 2 -way tailgate lock that controls the window of a 70 Chevelle wagon?
Just in case anyone is following this and trying to get locks for their 1982, dont bother looking them up for an 82 at the parts store. If you want to do away with the lock alarm switch like I am doing, it appears the locks for a 1980 have the same end on them, however a bit shorter in length. I am going to pick them up tomorrow and will report back.
1981 locks were the ticket. They fit and function fine. They are a bit shorter and I bent the elongated tab out a bit to compensate. The locks were easy to change.
thanks!
