i am installing a power steering gar box from borgeson on my 69 vette. it said to collapsed the column 1-2" for the new box + rag joint,did anyone do this on a 69 vette +how do you do it easy.

I had to do it when I installed my R&P. Put a piece of wood on the end of the steering column shaft and hit it with a big hammer. Doesn't get any easier than that.
It is much better if you can apply a steady pressure to move the steering shaft back up into the steering column. Hammering on the end of the steering shaft can damage the bearings that support the steering shaft. Obviously, it's a lot quicker to just give it a whack.
There is a lot of overlap where the solid upper steering shaft engages the tubular lower shaft. The two shafts are originally held in place by injected plastic. You shear small plastic sprues when you move one shaft relative to the other. However, there are no safety implications in moving the lower shaft an inch or two.
