Hello first post on the forum. I just got a 1969 vette on a trade deal and I am looking forward to learning more about it. I guess 1st ? would be I know where the engine #s are but how do I decode them ? I was told it was matching # 350 -300 hp auto. It has New stock exhaust but dose have Mallory dual point, Edelbrock manifold and carb .Car has black leather int, wood trim on doors, a/c ,not working but there, Auto Trans . Aftermarket smoked T Tops, The car is very clean with fresh wine candy paint . New chrome reverse wheels w/ new tires and corvette center caps, looks and runs great. The bad is it has a Ecklers front end on it with a cowl hood and no front bumper so it looks like a 73 model . Car drives straight and no signs of frame damage, solid floors I was wondering how much that will affect the value. He was asking 15k for the car, and I was hoping it would be worth somewhere around that. Also the speedo works but the miles dont move . stuck at about 18 000. What do you think ?

Doesn't sound too good to me, no matter how one looks at it. You say you have the car, it is a trade and the purchase price has yet to be determined? That sounds like getting married before taking her for a test drive.

Don't worry about matching numbers. The car is so far from original that the next buyer, with cash, won't even care. If you plan on spending more money on this car...you better enjoy doing the work and driving it around. I would think there are cars with better bones to use as a starting point...at least for a $15k price of admission.

Not being a member of the CF mod squad, I just better shut up and let them chirp in.

The engine identification code and VIN derivitive are stamped on a pad on the block at the front of the right head. Jot down what you find there.

I traded a nice 1986 corvette and a not running VW for it so anything over 7 k and I am good on the trade end . The car is so clean and being a 69 I just wanted to know if it could be worth mid Teens with a Ecklers front end on it. This was one of my favorite cars of all time growing up so I actually like the way it looks but I am concerned about where to draw my price line as far as what I would get back out of it after I am done playing. I will post some pics next week. Thanks

The deal with these cars is that the more you deviate from bone-stock(whatever that happens to be) the more you detract from the car's resale value. It might be worth more to YOU, but convincing someone else to pay what you think the car is worth is another matter altogether.

This isn't such an issue with rubber-bumper C3's since they typically have lower initial value, but cutting half the chrome bumpers off of a 68-72 car is probably the single worst thing that someone can do to the car in terms of preserving its value.

Now, there are modifications and then there are modifications...if whatever is done to the car is tacky and poorly executed, then that's something that should be corrected. If, on the other hand, the work was done cleanly and correctly and was reasonably tasteful to begin with, the car will generally be a more attractive resale proposition.

$15k in its present state, though? Not likely...
