I'm in the middle of an LSX swap on my 72. Before I put the engine in, I want to clean up the engine bay. I need ideas and pics of what others have done.
I was going to just clean it up with basic black, but now I'm considering adding some color. My exterior is a custom color, very similar to the current C6 Crystal Red Metallic. I'm also adding Van Steel A-arms, VA AC, hydro boost, and a custom radiator. Those items will add a lot.
Some of my thoughts are:
1) Pull the radiator supports out and have them powder coated. I could also have the new suspension parts powder coated a similar color. Could be a color matching my exterior, could be a pewter, other?
2) Paint the engine bay to match my exterior, with black accents (radiator support, etc).
One way to clean up your engine compartment is to get rid of the heater/AC unit. I replaced mine with a Vintage Air. It is amazing how this opens up the engine compartment and cleans it up.
I am for paint colors that compliment the car over chrome because chrome is on everyone's engine and I think it is better suited to a Harley then a corvette.
This is the beauty of doing your own car. Some guys want it factory correct. That's fine, but others like you and I obviously want to stray from that.
The rough texture of the firewall may not lend itself to a "color" coat. Filling and sanding to make it smooth will take a lot of time.
I painted mine a semigloss black and I'm happy with the way it's looking as I put the car back together. My project is a body off, so all of the chassis stuff is powder coated. I had the radiator support done too, not sure how much of it will be seen when all is bolted back together though.

Wow those 3 cars are clean. On my current project less is more. Nothing cleans up an engine compartment more than removing or hiding miles of vac lines and wiring. Filling in holes in the firewall also tidys thing up.
Man, I think my bay is clean, then I see these pics and realize I didn't spend enough time on mine. lol you guys suck. Seriously, those are some very nice looking cars. I can appreciate the hard work spent on those.
