Default 1981 heater core, replacement

Hello, this is my first time on this forum. I need to replace the Heater core and need detailed schematic of this for replacement, have manual, not detailed enough, which is better, through the engine bay or glove box, have AC. Really, Really don't want to pull the dash.

Search c-3 forums , it is a huge job and it will not be fun. I deleted the A/C on my 80 and will put in a new blower fan and a cover that will eliminate the A/C unit at fire wall so i figured i would do the heater core at same time .. HA ,,,, ill wait to do that until my heater core actually goes bad !!!

And this is from a guy who will replace any part in the slightest vicinity of any project !!!

Welcome to the forum. there are lots of threads on it with some good pictures.

I did it on my 82. I went from the inside. The whole dash does not have to come out. The panels on both sides of the consol do. the center cluster does and the glove box and pad on the passenger side does. I also took the passenger seat out for more room.

The rest is pretty straight forward. Disconnect all lines and hoses to the heater core box.

Cut the hoses under neath the car that go to the core, thats if you can't pry them off. If you cut make sure you get all the rubber off the core, the 2 tubes have to slip through small openings, won't fit with rubber on them.

Undo all the bolts that hold the core box from the inside. TRICK-THERE IS ONE NUT ON THE FIRE WALL SIDE THATS HARD TO SEE, YOU NEED TO GET IT OFF.

Center cluster has to come off to move the ducts around for install.TRICK- THERE IS A BOLT ON EACH SIDE OF THE CENTER CLUSTER THAT HOLDS IT TO THE CONSOL. Thats why you need to take off the the two side panels, to get at the bolts on each corner.

DUCT ON THE PASSENGER SIDE AND DRIVERSIDE WILL HAVE TO COME OFF TO GIVE YOU THE SPACE YOU NEED TO REINSTALL THE CORE BOX.

Heater core is in the core box. Clean it up, lube, reseal, etc while you are in there.

Rookie will take about 4 hours. With experience about 2 1/2.

Jim

Scoll down to post 13 in this thread for some pictures of the process. Gives you an idea of what you are looking at.

Changed my heater core this winter. Removed all the duct pieces and air distribution valves. Tested all valves with hand vacume pump to make sure they worked. Installed new seals on ductwork. One trick I learned is to install the defroster duct by reaching in the glove box opening. This piece has to fit into the main duct and it is almost imposible to move it around. Test heater core before you install it. You don't want to do the job over because of a leak. Good luck..

Hey Nona, I did a write up on replacing a heater core in my 73. I have a step by step process there. Check it out

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c3-g...on-a-73-a.html

It won't be exactly the same but you will get some good info from it.

Good photos and narrative.

Hi, I too would like to know this. I have removed the aircon and evaporator from my 81 and installed an AC delete cover. When I did that I could see my core but i wasn't actually able to pull it out. Do you know if it is possible to do this from the engine side on an 81 that no longer has AC? I have seen videos of that done on a 74 on youtube but the set up is different there...
