1981 heater core, replacement
And this is from a guy who will replace any part in the slightest vicinity of any project !!!
I did it on my 82. I went from the inside. The whole dash does not have to come out. The panels on both sides of the consol do. the center cluster does and the glove box and pad on the passenger side does. I also took the passenger seat out for more room.
The rest is pretty straight forward. Disconnect all lines and hoses to the heater core box.
Cut the hoses under neath the car that go to the core, thats if you can't pry them off. If you cut make sure you get all the rubber off the core, the 2 tubes have to slip through small openings, won't fit with rubber on them.
Undo all the bolts that hold the core box from the inside. TRICK-THERE IS ONE NUT ON THE FIRE WALL SIDE THATS HARD TO SEE, YOU NEED TO GET IT OFF.
Center cluster has to come off to move the ducts around for install.TRICK- THERE IS A BOLT ON EACH SIDE OF THE CENTER CLUSTER THAT HOLDS IT TO THE CONSOL. Thats why you need to take off the the two side panels, to get at the bolts on each corner.
DUCT ON THE PASSENGER SIDE AND DRIVERSIDE WILL HAVE TO COME OFF TO GIVE YOU THE SPACE YOU NEED TO REINSTALL THE CORE BOX.
Heater core is in the core box. Clean it up, lube, reseal, etc while you are in there.
Rookie will take about 4 hours. With experience about 2 1/2.
