My differential input and output seals are leaking pretty bad. If I take the pumkin to a shop, how much labor are we taking to reseal it? I know well enough to not try this one by myself...........
Im wondering if its worth it to drop the diff and bring it to a shop or put the money elsewhere (paint, cooling, etc....) and hit it next season.
I paid around $750 to machine shop Bob...but then we are fellow members of the Walters Engineering club. His labor was $300 and the rest were parts...bearings, seals and crush collar, plus a pin. I was glad the stub axles and posi were still good. No runs, drips or errors. He cleaned the inside, I cleaned and preserved the outside and re-filled with lubricant and posi additive.

OMFG. 6-750 bucks??....I had my entire rear end for my Camaro rebuilt (including new gears) for that much. UGH. Wasnt planning on selling a kidney for this.
my case was just the main seals, Faster Rat had a lot better deal. On the other side I was quoted 300.00 for just the rear main by a corvette shop in Crystal Lake, IL
If you're removing the unit, I would think no more than 2 hours labour to replace the seals by a competent mechanic.
If all he does is replace the seals and fails to inform you that your bearings have a problem...which caused the seals to leak. My goal in repairing and restoring the car has been to "zero time" things...while I'm at it. My dad, an A & P mechanic, often told me that anything worth doing is worth doing right.
if its out you might as well do a full rebuild, couple of years ago there was a member here doing rebuilds for a fair price (sorry, don't remember the name)
I went to a trusted shop today and for the seals he quoted me 150 labor and what ever parts will be. We will see what else he finds. So, removed from the car, this sounds about normal. When I saw 750 bucks from above I almost shat myself.
Scott
My bad. Looked up the parts. They were $183 at cost. Fluid and additive were $26. Total spent $509. My M-21 transmission was $410 parts and $428 labor from the same guy. It still leaks a little bits from the front.

you can trade in your old for a new rebuilt with new ring and pinion gear of your choice, new clutch packs, new bearings, new seals, all set up correctly, good for 100000 miles.. cleaned and painted, all for about 750.. why pay 4-500 just for a seal job?

Got something to do with being the born with rear end. Heck, I paid over $300 and waited 13 months to have my original fan clutch rebuilt. Call me foolish, but I'll get more of my money back than you ever will. I never came up with my money by being foolish either.
