Default rear quarter panel question

Does anyone know why some cars have a ridge protruding where the rear quarter meets the lock pillar and others are flush. While I was investigating door gap issue on my '69 I noticed one side had the protrusion and the other side didn't.I have since looked at a '71 and both sides protruded,a '75 that both sides were flush and another '75 where both sides protruded. There may have been changes between model years, but regardless of whether one year protrudes and one year does not, in any given model years both sides would have been the same. Sounds like driver's side on your 69 may have had some work in the past.

Thanks Easy Mike.Actually it's the passenger side where it's flush that something has been done I think. As far as I can tell it doesn't look like the quarter has been changed. Is the protruding part of the quarter or the lock pillar cover.I'm going to try and post some pics later of the area in question. Thanks

If I'm not mistaken the protrusion you're speaking of is where the inner quarter panel trim retainers mount. It pinches the (protrusion) between the retainer pieces and the inner 1/4 panel.

I'll snap you a picture in a few. I believe all the C3's had these and I'm positive the '69 did.

The protrusion slips into the lip of the panel then the retainers go on from the outside edge and screw into the inner panel.

Thanks Dzrick. If you look at the pics I posted the area in question is where the forward edge meets,I think Its called the lock pillar cover.the pics with the contour gauge shows the right side to be almost a 90 degree and the left has kind of à v shape on the edge by the door. Thanks again

This is where the rear quarter panel is bonded on.
my guess is some may have lined up better than others.
I always thought, they left the factory with a pinch protruding,
and those found more flush, were poorly done repairs. but I could be wrong.

69vette,
thats what I am trying to determine,is it the quarter or the pillar cover or both.the quarter does'nt appear to have been replaced.I only started looking closer because the door gap didn't look right.
