Default 68 seatbelt warning switch

Does anyone know how the switch/sensor that is in the driver seat actually works? I'm looking for a way to test it to see if it is any good before I reinstall it into my seat. Thanks!

There is no belt warning associated with the seat 55.
When you turn the key on the dash light comes on as a reminder.
You push the button directly below it to cancel the light.
You still are not required or reminded again to put your seat belt until you shut the car off and restart it .
Your dealing with the simplistic form of safety items in 1968.
Seat sensors and buzzers were much later.
My 68 has lap belts and shoulder belts and a reminder light on the dash.
I have a key buzzer that sounds like its dying
That was GM's new anti- theft reminder.

Schematically, this is how the system works:

Note that the spring drawn on the contactor is just to demonstrate the operating principle - the contactor arm is actually a leaf spring.

Default interesting

There was a long slender gizmo attached to the driver seat springs. Two thin pieces of metal, one looks to be stainless, sandwiching what looks like a white plastic honeycomb. A pair of wires coming off of it, attached to a black connector. I've seen a couple of these on ebay' and they're described as seat belt warning switches.

Could your seat belt mechanism have been changed out for a 1973 or later one at some point?

No worries!

My '72 has a gizmo in the seat springs also. I haven't looked closely at it to see how it operates but I assumed it was part of the seat belt warning system.

68s have no belt or seat sensors. The seat belt idiot light is all you get.

55,
sounds like at the very least a later lower seat half swap?
Like Mike said, that's all you get 4 '68.
The annoying buzzer is not associated with the seats.
It is the take your keys with you reminder.
I can't forget mine cause the buzzer is so awful you will do whatever it takes as fast as you can to silence that sound it sounds like a dying buzzard not buzzer.
No insult bad bird and great drawing by the way.
I never graduated past the etch a sketch.

That sounds like a late 72-3 switch maybe 74 not used in 68.

Default Thanks again

This kind of explains why the seat sensor wasn't hooked up to anything, I guess. I am pretty sure that the seats are from a 68; it has the shorter pivot bolt that thread into the seat bottom itself, instead of the longer ones that I believe fasten with a nut.

This car has had countless surprises, and cost gobs of money so far to get right.
