I’m in the process of reinstalling the dash on my 68 convertible. The problem I have is after checking all bulb and wiring information I have one wire and bulb that I cannot identify. The wire and bulb in question in the Console Cluster harness it is a single black wire with an 1895 bulb. I have checked the Assembly manual; shop manual, service manual as well as the supplied schematic from the wiring supplier all have basically the same drawings. I have been unable to identify its use. The wiring harness is from Lectric limited Inc. it’s a fantastic harness everything matches it’s just the one wire in question. All information would be appreciated.
To the best of my knowledge, there aren't any bulb wires that are black. On my 74', all the illumination wires are gray. The purpose bulbs are colored. Also, in general, the only black wires are, and should be ground wires.
Kind of weird, having one black wire and an extra at that.

standard configuration has black as ground. can you trace the wire backwards to try to determine if that was added on at some point for something later removed?? it certainly sounds like thats what it would be. solid black is always ground.
There are only three lights in a A/T console that I can remember. One for the lighter, one for the climate control and one for the shift indicator not sure about a manual. As others stated the gray wires all connect in a spider configuration just like the black ground wires. Any chnace of a photo?

I agree with you all the ground wires are normaly black with a ring or female spade terminal. The illumination wires are gray with bulb holders. I'm going to call the supplier tomorrow and check with them.
I never thought of the light for the automatic transmission indicator all the lamps are listed as console lamps not really stating exactly where they go. Does anyone know for sure what wire goes under the at indicator lens.
Update on wiring question, I checked my old wiring harness and sure enough there is a black with plug socket for a 1895 bulb. The origional wiring harness that I removed was in very good condition I decided to replace all wiring as I'm in the process of a complete frame off restoration.
The bulb for the heater/AC control is in a different leg of the wiring harness. The heater control switch plug, and heater control bulb are in the same wrap on the harness.
Latest and greatest answer I got in contact with Greg at Lectric Limited Inc. he had the answer immediately. The "black wire with the 1895 bulb holder is for the Wiper Warning Light". The light may be used on some 68's. If not used it is just taped over so as to not short out. Why its black is unknown but their wiring harness is the same as the origional wiring harness.
Amazing, a black wire for the wiper light! Glad you found the answer and I'm sure he knew, because he gets called on this often enough. Now we know too (or at least until another thread is started and we forget!)
