Default Audio question

Asking for a little help...I'm getting ready to replace my head unit and speakers in my '82, and was looking for suggestions on the best set up without breaking the bank. Should I just replace the 4x6s in the dash or put some larger speakers in the kick panels? Also, I'm looking to put some 6x9s in the rear, and have seen some really good looking angled boxes for the rear corners on this forum. Does anyone have a pattern for these?

I don't understand why everyone puts 6x9's in the rear. This is only going to make your rear louder than the front, which you don't want. I got 6.5 component sets front and back on mine.

I'm putting 6.5's in the kick panels with only slight modification required and disconnecting the dash speakers personally. I shudder to think about trying to make something work in the dash.

They were factory installed in a number of cars, certainly the 78-82s.

I'm concerned with footwell space in my 78, or I'd be running 6.5s up front and just a sub in the back.

Ahh that makes sense for the later models I guess.

I'm losing about an inch with the 6.5's I got. It's not too bad unless you try to angle them up and do some funky fiber-glass custom enclosure work. If you really look for the perfect speakers, I bet you could find some sixes that mount under there completely stock.

I went with 5 1/4" JL Audio components for the kickpanels and still had to cut a hole for the speaker. The magnet BARELY fits in the recessed area behind the kickpanels. Tweeters were installed in the dash replacing the factory 4x6" speakers. Subwoofer in back with amp.

Many people have done custom enclosures to add bass; be creative and get a better low-end compared to 6x9"s if financially possible.

I took the in dash speakers out, cut the mounts off them with the dremel and drilled a couple of holes. I made some aluminium pillers and used the original mounts with new 6x4 JBL's for under the dash. Got 6x9's for the rear but the jury is out whether the carpeted box is too big ? Need to get pics
