I have a 1980 vet. the upper dash against windshield has a few chips in it near speaker grilles and is brittle. Can I replace it or repair? I don't want to use a dash pad. Again this is the black part against windshield with defrost and speaker grilles in it. Help
Have you though about getting a dash cover? Or is that what you meant by dash pad?
As far as I know they don't sell just that black part. I think the only way to "fix" that area is to replace the whole dash since you said that you didn't want to use a dash pad.
I needed to replace mine also. It was junk, cracked and busted all over. Bought a used one from a CF member and, yes, I went the cheap route with one of those caps. Very little trimming but it took the weekend to get it in.
Hey twk1946, got the same problem with my dash,, maybe even worse. Let us know what you decide and what kind of problems it is to replace/repair. I'd be completely happy with the result that procketus had with his, great pic. I'd add some pics of mine if I could figure how to do it, $*&%&*Y. Have fun!
I personally am not a fan of covers....they always LOOK like a cover....
It's a Vette....if you can afford it, replace it.
I suck at interior work and still managed to do my WHOLE interior with the help and guidance from this forum....you can do it!!!!!!!!!!!!

That may be true, but to the casual observer it looks like a real dash. I debated putting in a real one for the past year or so and obviously decided to go this route. Plus the finances were not there, I had saved enough to get this cap. Not saying in the future I won't get a real one though. And I was getting REAL sick and tired of looking at what was there.
In the last three months, I've redone my entire interior. The upper dash has a very small crack, barely noticeable to most people but it is all I see the moment I sit in the car. I'm having it redone by the same guy who did my interior next week. He is pulling it out, recovering it and re-installing it. Can't wait to see it all done.

I can totally understand the $$$ issue....these cars ain't cheap....
Yes. The adhesive comes with it. Put a bead around the perimeter and around the gauges, basically anywhere it will stick to the original. I used about 1/2 the tube. Also there are indentations where the screws are used for the gauges and on the outside by the doors. It's held in there pretty tight.
I think it may depend on the year and/or the model of the cap. The cap for my son's '76 just covered the top part and it snapped into place without any adhesive. It's been in place for 8 years now without any problems.
