Help needed on power steering issue 75 corvette
1st the power steering issue. When I got the vette bubba had taken the power steering belt off and the pump was dry. So I thought lets try something easy first. So I filled it with power steering fluid and the power steering worked. Got up the next morning and it was all over the floor
So tonight I decided to start investigating and couldnt tell where it came from.So I filled it again
Started the car, turned the steering back and forth, shut the car off looked all over everything, dry as a bone
did it again same thing no leak and dry
So I dont know where the leak is coming from my guess I'll get up tomorrow morning and it will be all over the floor.I was hoping maybe the o-rings swelled and sealed and thats why I cant find a leak now.Sooooo while I was under there I noticed the steering cylinder rod was going completely through the frame bracket and all it had was two washers and the nut I checked the book and aparently there should be a kotter key and bushings. My question is is it normal for that rod to extend through the frame bracket as far as it wants to and the inside washer and missing bushing just slide freely up the rod.I read some posts on steering on here and it was reccomended to replace it all but I realy dont want to spend that much cash right now.You could easily spend 650.00 If the rod on the cylinder shouldnt go through the frame bracket then I assume the bracket is hogged out or is there a lip worn away from the cylinder rod. Also with the engine off if I wiggle the steering column shaft back and forht should I here a swish swoosh..Any help appreciated....Thankyou.....Dave....oh my last issue after this ione is solved is the rear brakes theirs a leak somewhere and the rear reservoir was dry .
I had exactly the same symptoms as you on my '74 coupe, the control valve was shot. I fitted a Borgeson integral power steering box and did away with the control valve, power ram and four hoses hanging under the engine. The box lists for US$459 and you need a Drag Link Adapter to replace the control valve. Or a manual drag link or relay rod. And a two hose kit. And maybe a new pump or a rebuilt one. It might just need a couple of O rings.
This modification will give you a much friendlier 12.7:1 steering ratio, about two and a half turns LTL instead of four. And the amount of boost is linear, depending on how far you turn the wheel. Your car will steer like a modern car, it's that good. Look them up on www.borgeson.com or call Jeff, Gil or Barbara on 1-860-482-8283 and tell them "aussiejohn" sent you.
The products are first class and made in the USA. They come with a full written warranty, should you ever need it. Good luck.
