I would like to ditch the plastic steering wheel on my 74 coupe and replace it with a wood one. What year steering wheel would mount to my car allowing me to use my stock hub and horn cap. Maybe a Camaro or Chevelle steering wheel.
What would fit/work?
67's had a factory optioned wood steering wheel. I know you can have this wheel made for a 68. I'm pretty sure you can have a wood wheel made for a 69 and 70. These wheels look like the 67 factory wheel, except the 69 and 70 wheels are 15" diameter. The 67 and 68 wheels were 16 inches. These wood wheels go for about $700.

There are some wheels offered on ebay from Grant (14 inch diameter) that are direct bolt on replacements that use your existing hub and horn ring. They do not require any kit or mods to install. They even include 6 new hex head bolts. These wheels are usually available for comfortably under $100.00 delivered. If your old wheel is still in good shape hang on to it - they seen to keep going up in value.

Do I need to buy the adapter kit? Or does it come with it?
The answer remains no. The newer Grant wheels don't include an adapter kit as a kit isn't needed. Some of the older model Grant wheels [like the one pictured in this thread] did need to be adapted. By the way, nothing seems to fit on a 1976 Corvette .
Do some sniffing on ebay before squeezing the "buy it now" trigger as prices vary quite a bit for exactly the same wheel depending on the vendor. I just paid $70.00 plus $17.00 shipping ($87.00 delivered) for a leather wrapped 14 inch Grant wheel. The wood version of the same wheel was $168.00 delivered from Summit. Both are straight bolt ons. Always call the vendor to make sure your car is in the compatible group just to be safe. The manufactures box that my wheel came in states that no kit is needed for installation as well as the spec sheet from Summit on the $168.00 wood wheel. While my wheel is yet to be mounted on my car the quality of my new wheel looks to be quite nice. I have no doubt that the wood wheel will not disappoint.

do a search for Eric Freeman 64-66 teak wheels. he can make you a real teak wood wheel on your steering wheel frame. or buy one of his pre made that uses a 67-68 wheel with the steep in the mounting hub.
you guys can keep those tacky grant wheels I would not put them in anything I own. and are they really wood or just plastic wood
Yup, they're real wood, exotic wood no, but real forest grown wood, yes. I wanted to change my steering wheel mostly for the one inch less diameter, a tad less recess in the hub and for a thicker more modern rim.
For a serious car show I'll put the skinny, and oh so masculine larger diameter piece of junk these cars came fitted with back on just to wow the NCRS folks .

Would you have a picture of the teak wheel, Nowhere? I ask because the wheel Vetteguy posted looks quite nice to me..........so I'd like to see what a "non-tacky" one looks like. Thanks in advance.......
Very nice Ervin, jeesh........now you've got me thinking..........I think that still works out cheaper than sending my original one in to CC next winter to be redone. You gonna pull the trigger?
I already pulled it, ordered it when I got home from work. It may not be a custom made one, but its nice. I'm not rich, nor do I have more money than brains. It looks good and fits my financial situation. I have a couple more things planned this season and only have so much put aside to do it. I need to be thrifty with my spending to get the most for my money.

This is one I installed probably 25 years ago, a Nardi I think. Not sure if they even make them anymore. the flash makes it look a little orange but it is a nice warm brown finished wood.
