OK, got a 71 with a 76 engine (350), for a few weeks I notice if I cornered and accelerated hard, immediately afterwards she would hesitate a lot. then be ok. Bought new fuel filter but never actually put it on! Last week round long curve and she sputtered a while and then left me stranded. Put the new filter on but no gas was getting to the carb so I assumed Mech pump was bad. Replaced pump - started right up - yeah! BUT NOW when I go around a simple corner she tries to die, when I pull into the drive with a small slope she dies, when she sets for more than 5 minutes the clear fuel filter goes empty (back into the tank) Filter is a simple inline between pump and carb. Tightened all hoses, blew air back into tank, what now?
well replaced all fuel hoses, put compressed air thru them again and it was plugged, persistence got it unplugged and I could here the tank gurgle. Took it out and it ran, until hard accel, then she died when I let off. Thinking something in the tank, read somewhere of a baffle (?) in it that can come loose?
point of interest - put a clear filter on and even though it is running I see no fuel in the filter - must be good for gas mileage but whats up with this?

the "sock"/screen in tank gets corroded and blocks flow.
When I started having those issues I decided to spend $300 and bought a fuel tank kit for $309. Came complete with tank, sending unit, straps and the short hoses and mounting hardware. Never had another issue.
Had the same issues with mine. did some reading and decided to drop the gas tank. I emptied the tank and change the whole sock and float assembly. I put everything back together and all is well

Don't have to replace the tank unless it is in rough shape...to take care of the sock you can just pull the sending unit (for 71 yours comes out the bottom of the tank) and replace components of it...like the sock, or you can just toss in a new sending unit.

Eliminated strainer in tank, ran without gas cap to be sure it was getting vent. Still after long acceleration it will run a few blocks normal speed then it will simply act like there is no gas and shut off. I am clueless! Guess its time to call the mechanic
so the engine gets fuel when you are working the pump hard, but afterwards it doesnt. no filter in carb. new fuel filter, new pump, no filter in tank....
i don't know what carb you have but if it is an edelbrock it may have additional fuel inlet screens before the needle valves.when i rebuilt mine it said to use either those or the main inlet filter at the fuel inlet to the carb.but not to use both.they may be remaining in the carb so just a thought.
