Default '73 Speedometer Issues

I'll try to make this not very long winded.

Everything was relatively normal until the last few days, even though the speedo 'bounced' a lot. Then it started to stick while driving at around 20mph...then bounce back up and back down etc...

Removed the old cable, and everything appeared pretty much normal with it. Not broke etc.

Purchased a new speedo cable at Auto Zone (Pioneer Brand) which was substantially longer (100 inch I believe) than what was on there (What was on the car was in the 80 inch range I believe). Installed it and tried to rotate it while installed to the transmission and it broke. One thing I noticed is that the inner cable itself on the old cable has somewhat square fittings, and the new cable was round (the outer attatchments were identical).

I reinstalled the old cable and the same problem persists, now it's a bit worse though. So...

I am thinking that the cable might just be worn out, even though things seem relatively ok with it, or it might be the 90 degree adapter on the transmission (4 speed car). The 90 degree adapter is kind of loose, meaning you can rotate it back and forth a bit...I don't know if that is normal.

I really hope this isn't a speedometer gear, as I don't want to pull the dash off if I don't have to.

If the needle stuck at one indicated speed while you were doing a different speed or were stopped, the gauge is toast.
