I've heard that only the '69 'Vette came with side pipes as an option, but I've also heard that some other years dealers offered side pipes as well (but not from factory). Is this the case for C3s from 1977?
I actually have side pipes on the car already, however, they were put on a few years ago and were not original. Every second year cars have to be inspected in Norway in order to be legal to drive, and everything that is fun and looks good is usually illegal. Unless it is original (or was available when the car was new). I am a bit afraid that there will be a problem getting the car through inspection, but there will be no problem if I can find a '77 that was sold new with side pipes
Any GM dealer could sell '69 sidepipes as spare parts. '75 and up Corvettes had catalytic converters and federal regulation made it illegal to remove or bypass them so I doubt any dealer would install them.

Federal regulations still make it illegal to remove the catalytic converter, but if your state doesn't have an inspection then it's not very likely you will be caught.
I know when Florida did have inspections years ago, cars over 20 or 25 years old were exempt because they were considered "classics". So in other states this may be also. I would check your state laws. I also remember being 19 up on Long Island and bringing my 81 Trans Am in to a gas station to get it inspected. If you had the right amount of $$ the guy would put your cars info into the machine, and place the tail pipe tester into another car to pass.! This is America. I am sure there are still some situations like this going on with these inspections. To me it's a big hoax for $$. All the cars made from 1995 and up can and will pass with flying colors. It's the big trucks, City Bus's, Garbage trucks, Dump trucks that need to be inspected...
The 77 is a odd car,I owned one for 7 years. Some cars had cats some did not.If I remember there was a sticker near the driver side hood post indicating if the car had cats.I put side pipes on my car with no problems but I know of some that have had problems and fines. You may be better off going with a good monza type system.
Not sure, good question. I know that 77 was the last year that some cars came without CATs.
I just got a 77 and plan to put side pipes on it.
Hopefully someone with the C3 corporate knowledge will pipe in.
depending on where you live you can just put them on the car and be done.
I think last true duel exhaust without CAT was 1974. I believe starting 75 all cars came with CAT as emission standard. I've looked at VA State Police Inspection page and it also states that all cars after 75 will require CAT to pass state emission.

correct. Never heard of a post '74 Corvette without a cataclysmic perverter.
