Default Hood latching problem

1980 stock hood:
When I drop the hood from about 6 inches the right side latch closes but the left one just bounces open. I can then push on the hood above the left hand latch and it catches and closes. I've tried to adjust the latching mechanism but haven't been successful yet. Anyone ever had a similar problem and solved it? TIA.

Is the left side not aligned or is it simply missing the latch? You can shim the catch on the hood for possibly better contact with the latch.

what did you do to 'adjust' the latch? center the male pin? adjust the movement of the locking slide? if the male pin is centered and the hood doesn't catch, it's bacause the slide isn't engaging the 'mushroom'. the rubber stop may be too high, or by moving the latch while centering the slide may need to be adjusted by using a different hole on the cable attachment.
be careful here. you don't want to lock the hood down.

I've moved the locking pin (actually a loop on my car) on the hood and the locking mechanism on the body numerous times. I'll try shimming. That was exactly my fear with getting too radical with adjustments, locking the hood down. Thanks
