I have a 74 that I need to sell. It would be a very dedicated person's project or a parts car. I have been asked what I want for it and I honestly have no idea what to charge. Could anyone help me with a round-about guesstimate as to what I should ask for it?
You need to provide details about the car. Is it a coupe or convertible? Does it have the original engine? Does it run? Does it need a lot of bodywork in addition to paint? Is there frame rust? Any significant damage? Does the entire interior need to be replaced? What major parts are missing.
You could be talking about $1500... $2500... $3500 or who knows? impossible to guess until you provide details.
Pictures will tell most of the story but you also need to state what kind of work the car needs in order for any one to determine what it is worth. I saw some people selling a POS for $4500 and it needed about $5000 to $6000 to get it running again. If I were to buy a project car the first thing I am going to price is how much will it cost me to get it in prime condition again. Most of these cars are selling for about $10,000 in really good shape. So subtract what you think it will take to finish the car from this price and that is about what it is worth as a guide line for someone that wants a project car to fix up. I would also adjust it to what the resale value to what I would expect to sell it for.
I just bought a 1977 with 43,260 miles on it when I got it for $9000.00 that needs very little work I can turn it around for $12,000 to $14,000 in the condition it is in once I spend about $1000.00 on it fix all the problems I have found after 4 weeks of ownership. Hemmings has this car listed for between $13,500 and $25,000 in the retail market if I was a dealer after fixing all the problems to the right buyer. The car I bought is all original except dual exhaust and 2 CATs interior near perfect condition except 35 years of wear and faded carpets than has a fairly new paint job. I could roll my car for a profit but going to keep it since I am beyond project cars.
