Default Factory alarm question

Just got my alarm working by replacing fender switch....

The alarm goes off when you open the doors and hood but cuts right off when you shut them.......

That does not do any good if someone gets in and shuts door and alarm stops... What is the point then

Is this right?

I know factory alarm will not stop a true thief but I am one of those types that wants everything to work correctly
Thanks,

That is the way it works. You are dealing with 39-year-old technology. Not terribly sophisticated. A simple on-off system.

Yes, that's the way they were made. I tried at one point to come up with a simple timer that would not shut off the horn for a period of time. Really not worth the time and effort to modify the system.

On the other hand if the alarm does go off and the door or hood is not closed it will run forever, at least until the battery dies.

If you don't like the system as designed, bypass it with a more modern system that can be had for a very reasonable cost.

FWIW, my '72 doesn't work like that. When I trip the factory alarm, the only way to dis-arm it is to turn it off with the key.

If I shut the door or hood with the alarm's horn sounding, it continues to sound until I turn it off with the key (or until the battery dies).

Thats what I would expect it to work like otherwise the system was worthless from the start...

sooo do you think its a bad relay or something?

1969. There was no factory alarm on the lunar module.

Factory alarms were intended as deterrents. They were never intended to make the car theft proof.
