Its not a big deal to install I know that I did both doors on my 71 while the doors were apart. I am not sure if you can do it with the regulator still in the door mine were out. The only reason I can see for replacing the whole regulator would be if the teeth on the gear are worn even at that you can rebuild it.
Do you mind suggesting a good place to buy the rebuild parts for these and similar items?
There are several good vendors that support this forum that have what you need. I hate to endorse one over the other but I use Zip a lot because they can deliver within two days of ordering from were I am located. Once you remove the regulator and inspect it you may or may not need more than just the spring.
i knew this day would come I'd had to open this door up. spring ordered. thanks again!
If the regulator is in there real nice and the window works well try to do it without taking it out. You should be able to see up in there with a mirror. Remember the spring is installed with the regulator in the full up position. The trick will be getting the arm in place. You maybe able to do this by undoing the upper stops on the track and powering the window up just a bit more. If you choose to try this make sure you mark there position and return the stops to the exact same place. If it doesn't work its no big deal you need to remove the upper stops anyway to get the regulator out.
There is a picture at this link that should give you a visual of what to expect.
