Default Blank Build Sheet

Thanks for taking a look at my 1st post.
I joined this forum last night. After reading many threads it has renewed my enthusiasm into the corvette world. I restored my 70 L46 back in 1992/93. As I disassembled the rear area and dropped the gas tank, there sat the tank sticker. (By the way, as you looked up from under the car, looking at the underside of the top panel, gas filler area, the factory assembler prior to the gas tank installer wrote in white wax crayon "HI BOB in big letters across the panel! I assumed Bob installed the tanks back in late 69 early 70. Any way... Back to the tank sticker, IT"S BLANK!! The original document is fully legible. The filled in area shows no signs that anything was ever typed in. Has anyone ever encountered anything like this? I did a little research back in 93 when I had the car judged (NCRS), but came up empty. None off the judges ever heard of it (Dick Whittington of Texas, Sal Carbone of Ct.) to name a few. Please excuse the spelling of the judges name, it was a long time ago. The original owner stated it was an export car. Does that have anything to do with it? Many thanks in advance, NEW GUY.

Is it possible that the build sheet only shows extra options and that car was ordered without any extras?

The car has 350/350 hp, power windows, steering, brakes, and alarm.

Pete...I'm always fascinated by St Louis build records even though most of my study has been the 1973-82 period when the buildsheet became the landscape style versus portrait as you describe. A few questions for clarification:

Are you saying that you have a blank and you one (original) that was partially filled in? Multiple copies is not unusual but a blank is not a common find whether it was in 1970 or any other 1970 model year.

My 78 was an export car but it was still assembled in St Louis and therefore would have its buildsheet...it was a standard practice both in 70 and throughout the 70s. Twenty years ago there was probably was not as much attention to build sheets as there is today. The National Corvette Museum offers buildsheets services that are primarily for the Bowling Green built Corvettes. Other services help late model C3 owners with dealer invoices and NCRS offers some services that get around the edges of data that would giver some indication a Corvette was built in America. The export nature would limit build records that some of these services are able to offer. BTW...your memory is excellent...Dickie and Sal are still around and judging Corvettes.

Your "Hi Bob" note would have come from the body shop. At the time fuel tanks were installed in the frame, there was no body.

...Back to the tank sticker, IT"S BLANK!...
I've never seen a blank one. I've seen low/no option cars have a minimum of entries, but never completely blank.

Is there any markings on the tank sticker at all? Tank stickers originally had both typed, and hand written information on them.

Information needed for the build (colors, engine, trans, options, delivering dealer, etc.) were all typed onto the build sheet. The job number was usually hand written, on the right hand side of the "Description" area of the tank sticker. Some tank stickers, also had another number written on the top, between where it says "Chevrolet Motor Division", and "Corvette Order Copy". Stickers sometimes have changes/corrections written on them, checks, or other marks on them too.

I think the tank sticker was a "carbon copy", of the actual build sheet, often causing the typed info to be very light or faded, and making it difficult to impossible to read. The job number was written on in ink, and is usually darker and easier to read.

Can you post a picture of the tank sticker, for us to see?

Gas tanks were installed on the frame, before the body drop. The "Hi Bob" was probably an inside joke to someone on the line, but probably not the guy that installed the tank. He wasn't likely to see the body.

I have a 1971 that is an export car and the Corvette Order Copy sheet has information printed on it. Have seen a lot of these documents and have never seen a completely blank one before.

It's possible that the dirt/dust just washed the ink away. When I pulled my tank sticker off my 77 I started to blow off the dust/dirt. The ink justed blew away with it leaving blank spacing. I was lucky that I had my camera with me to take pics, and I was taking pics of everything I was doing. I was able to look at my pics and fill in the areas that I mistakenly blew away.!!

Pete, if you are looking for build sheet info on your car; and you're sure the car was an export model, you can contact GM Vintage Vehicle Services for a complete printout.
GM Canada keeps records of all vehicles imported into Canada, well back into the early 60's.

hunt4cleanair,
I found my build sheet! I originally stated it was blank . .. I'm 24 years older than the first time I saw it and now I can see something in the first column closer to the bottom. I can't make it out though I'm not sure what I'm looking for. Should the top be blank? I thought the entire top would be filled in. I also found my title search that revealed all of the prev. owners. As the story goes Robert Fiocca was the first person who owned the car and was purchased from Norwalk Auto Sales (so the above story goes) where the above story was told though you'll see in the title search it was previously titled in N.J. Robert told me the window sticker was still on the car when he purchased it.
I'm having problems uploading photos. Can I email them to you and you could post them.

Best regrds,
Pete

Pete

Sure! Scans of buildsheets offer readers better resolution than a photo unless its exceptionally high quality.
