Default S 10 5 speed in a c3?

has anyone tried this? i would love to have a manual but just cant afford a keisler or even an original 4 speed . i have been considering a s 10 5 speed behind the 4.3. as i understand this will bolt up directly to most sbc. it would be going in my 77 which is an automatic. the tranny goes from 400.00 to 750.00 on ebay and ive found one for as little as 200.00 locally on cl.? after driving the mr2 with its 5 speed,, the 77 needs a manual to wake her up a bit. my engine is relatively stock with just headers and an edelbrock performer intake so i dont think it would be too much power.and i never drive it hard or woulds try to " rip off second gear"! i considered a 5 speed from a mid 80s trans am but after owning one in the 90s i know that they are just junk. i realistically think i could do this for alot less than a 1000.00 with me of course doing all the work. id really like to go with a hydraulic clutch also. im sure ill be chastised for not spending the cash on a "real" 5 speed (keisler, tremec, etc ) but hey im just a poor guy that is always going to be on a budget. ... so if anyone has done this please shout out.
thanks
billy

if you look at the later S10's around 90 or so , they are the world class and have better bearing. also look for a camaro tail housing, has the shifter is farther back then the S10, camaro bucket seats and s10 having the bench seat.
but the camaro bell housing turns the trans 18* (I think). but the s10 is straight up.

I would pound on it but with a stock C3 engine and street tires you should be fine.
I have a link the the s10 5 speeds let me find it.

I too would like to find an affordable 5 speed swap. I have read that a Z28 from the '80's has a Tremec (which I thought were good), and that this was a recommended swap.

Am I wrong about the Z28's having a Tremec trans?

Do the '80's Trans Am's have a different 5 speed from the '80's Z28's?

If you don't mind me asking, what did the trans do/fail to do, that lead you to conclude that they're "junk"?

If your experience extends beyond the one you owned, that would be helpful as well. In other words, is it possible that the one you had was a lemon, but not the whole fleet?

Because it would seem that a trans spec'd for V-8 service would be a better choice than one spec'd for V-6 duty, all other things being equal....

I appreciate you sharing your pricing research on the S10 trannies.

Thanks much.

Go for a T5 world class with a Ford Tailhousing. The inner shafts are the same and an easy swap. This puts your shifter level as well as a level mount. Al

i may have spoken out of turn concerning the 80s 5 speeds. by the time i got my old trans am she was getting worn out anyway. i have heard of others also having issues, especially with the second gear synchro, could be everyone was trying to rip off second! i just had a bad experience when my tranny came out completely and the car rolled into a telephone pole. i figure that being in a z28 or t a they were wailed on pretty hard as where an s 10 would have perhaps not have been.
billy. oh and thank you for the link, 4 speed

Yes, the Ford T5 will bolt to a Chevy bellhousing with the propper adaptor plate. The Fords T5 are more plentifull also. Check this out http://www.wilcap.com/chevy.html#350FT5
