Does anyone have any tips on cleaning the fuse block while its out and apart? Im talking about the main spade connection between the interior/ exterior - 3/8" bolt from firewall. Im thinking go get some electronics cleaner and spray through from the wire's side of the connectors? maybe a pipe cleaner or? thanks for any help / tips!
Many years ago I ran across a '63 vert that had terrible rust on the fuse clips themselves, and they were stamped/crimped to copper bus lines and those crimps had corroded to the point of useless....then the resistance got high on the steel clips to the fuse, and would actually melt the solder connection of the internal fuse construction and the fuse would 'blow' while the fuse element/wire was actually FINE, inside the glass
I installed a bunch of inline plastic modern fuses and got over it.....tossed the old corroded fuse panel in the garbage....
it's a PIA to do, no question, but you only talking a dozen fuses or so.....need be able to solder wires, or you are screwed on this one.....
Good wash down with varsol to remove mostly gunk on the outsides
Then spray with a good contact cleaner and then compressed air if you have it. (the cleaner to loosen and the air-blast to remove)
Check it all over under a good light, pull out any pins that are actually in rough shape and clean (steel wool) or replace
A good slathering of dielectric grease to protect it (let the arguments begin)
Good to go.
