Default Spare Tire Lock

Just a quick possibly silly question, is the spare tire lock meant to keep the spare tire holder up or just keep other people out?

I only ask because I purchased one, but I am having a hard time getting it to fit. It previously had an assortment of wire and bent hangers.

Will it stay in place by itself during normal driving?

Thanks,
Jay

The tire will stay in place without the lock. If you leave your car outside, use a lock. Original spares demand high dollar.

it lives in the 3rd stall, if i go anywhere to leave it, usually its just to work where i don't think many people know about that.

Thanks for the reply! How is the lock installed, I can't seem to get it on there and stay. Does the tire tray go above the ridge or the just above the big ****.

Thanks,
Jay

The notch on the tray goes above the rounded area on the bolt. The inner tab on the lock indexes in the re Essex notch below tat. I've found that turning the key to the right to depress the tab, then putting the lock on with the tab recessed, and then letting the key turn back to allow the tab to project again is what works best.

The hook in the tray, sits on the ridge on the lock bolt. The lock goes over the hex head, and up against the underside of the ridge.

The idea was that to drop the spare, you removed the lock, loosened up the lock bolt enough, that you could swing the bolt to the side, and drop the tub. You didn't need to remove the bolt entirely. To hang the tub back up, you reverse the process.

The purpose of the lock, was to keep the tire from being stolen, not to keep the bolt in place. Spares on regular cars, were safely locked in the trunk, but on Corvettes they were hanging underneath, where they could be easily stolen.

Chevrolet stopped using spare tire locks in 79. I think they decided that it wasn't very likely that anyone would steal the temporary use spare, that was coming in the Corvette by then.
