Default Blue or Blue?

Hey Y'all,

I am finishing up a frame off restoration on a 73 convertible. It was a barn find in a garage in Cincy, husband passed away 10 years ago, wife finally just wanted to out of the garage… No documentation but had the original block (aftermarket heads, intake, etc), original Muncie 4 speed, and a period correct rear case (I assume original but no way to tell for sure). It was repainted dark green but was originally Elkhart Green with black interior. It was significantly "bubba'd" and it had some rust in the birdcage. I pulled the body, stripped and powdercoated the frame, rebuilt and/or upgraded everything including wilwood replacement brakes, VBP suspension, bluprinted steering box, etc. The reason I tell you this is I am not building a NCRS car. Just a nice driver…

So, now with the background out of the way, the reason I am posting. I am going to deviate from Elkhart Green to a shade of blue. I would like to go with a blue from the C3 family and have narrowed it down to 2. I need to choose by Friday so I am wondering if there are folks that have seen both of these and could comment. I have looked at a ton of pictures but the same color looks completely different depending on the picture. I am looking for a metallic blue. I like the 73 (927) Dark Blue but am afraid it is too purple in the sunlight (just from pictures)? The other is 70 Bridgehampton Blue.

Can anyone that has seen both help with some highlights of the differences of these two colors?

BTW I have a 71 Z28 in Mulsanne Blue, that would be my first choice but don’t want 2 cars in the same color

Thanks!!!!
-Scott

Bridgehampton Blue, when done well, is beautiful.

My 73 is Dark Blue (927) and does not look purplish at all in sun or shade. Bridgehampton Blue would be my second choice for a blue - have seen it once and it looks great.

Thanks Fran!

Had I bought one in 73 that (927 Dark Blue) is the color I would have bought! The picture in your sig looks fantastic! Thanks for the insight on the purple (or lack there of).

My 69 Vette is LeMans Blue, so I can't help you. However, you simply must post a pic of your 71 Z28- I love that color!

If i post images I should really start with the vette:

How I found it

Now

My twin girls and "daddy's hotrod". Gonna be trouble in a few years

The Z isn't done yet. 8 months into body work . It is ready for paint but I am taking a couple of weeks off to paint the vette. The Z is a bit more of a project. I am building it into a pro-touring car.

That's for looking and the input on paint!

Awesome work...I know you don't want the green...my vote is Bridgehampton Blue...I'm a bit biased though as that's the color of my 71

Easily the best shot is of your girls- scrapbook material. You definitely need to post updates on both cars. Sneak the Z28 pics & info in this section with some info on the Vette so nobody moves it elsewhere. Looking forward to seeing all the progress. Good luck.

I know you mentioned you want to keep it a C3 color, but I'm gonna suggest C4 Admiral Blue, just because its so d@mn nice.

Scott--

Very nice work!!! I'm partial to '73 verts as well... You'll probably kill me as mine came in Dark Blue/Blue, but changing it to Black/Red... Couldn't imagine working on two different projects at the same time... Sometimes it is a struggle to concentrate on just one car!!! Keep it up...

My 2001 is Navy and I love the dark color. My 1970 was originally Bridgehampton Blue (black when I bought it) and I debate going back to it. It is a gorgeous color.

However, if Mulsanne Blue is your fav, why not paint them both the same color? I say do that.

Thanks! Yeah, my plan was not to do these both at the same time but opportunity knocked (Vette was $1,000 to drag it out of her garage). As much as I love the Z, everyone else always wants to know what is up with the vette . And yes, I do have the most understanding wife in the world.

Its been decided, i am painting it Dark Blue with Black top and interior. Gonna get this one buttoned up and hopefully running this summer and then back to the Z.

Thanks for the replies all!!!

Default Update

Just realized I never updated everyone on the color... I ended up with the darker blue. Turned out nice, and 2 years later it is back on the road! Still have a short list of stuff to finish, but it is cool to drive it!

Thanks for the help and support of the forum over the years, it is amazing to have a question and just be able to search here and find the answers!

here is my 73 927 code blue. My painter gave me 3 choices from matching the code at his supplier, I chose the lightest with no reds because I didn t want any purple.

This shot gives a good view of the color in both shade and sun! My avatar pic is the old shade.

Good luck!
