Default Horn Sounds Terrible !

Hi All,

The horn on my '72 sounds weak and really bad. Is it possible to fix it or adjust the tone or is it just gone?

Thanks, Bob

I have a single horn on my '73 and its sounds weak as well. It appears newer and I believe the previous owner installed the high tone horn from a "two tone" set from another vehicle. Looking for a fix myself.

Replace it. If memory serves, there is no adjustment you can make. For some model years, you can purchase a rebuild kit and rebuild yours.

2 1/8" headers into 4" side exhaust with spiral turbo baffles make for a good horn.....wakes 'em up when when you walk into the gas.

If you're not terribly set into stock you can buy lots of cheap alternative horns at most local parts stores down the road from you.

Sometimes I think I want to get an 18-wheeler horn setup as the C3 is so low that people in SUV's don't see you down there and just wonder sideways into your lane.....4" side exhaust works for them as well .....see them jump at the wheel when you let them know that you're actually there where they're wondering into your space

Plastic universal replacement horns run about $20; will require a bit of trial and error to get it to fit in the same place as original.

Also depending upon what the horn is, some have an adjustment screw that will change the note...but will require removal in order to get to this screw....and the screw is "star" type, requires either a special bit or I used a pair of pliers to adjust the tone.

Good luck getting to the horn....it is in a tight spot. Only reason I was able to get to mine was that I have the headlight assemblies completely removed as part of the repainting.

I have decided to take the advice of "Summerfun" and "Lanny 81". Although my 72 roadster is 99% original, I think that being heard when you blow the horn is more important than originality for a daily driver. I am going to install two new horns that I found on ebay for $24. They are rated at 110 DB. Thanks for all the input.
