Default Basically

Duntov Motors if you have that kind of money because they have really trick cool stuff. Some of the items they used to list are no longer on their website. They do sell aluminum based stiffeners!

The alternative for the less exotic (traditional) is Stainless Steel Brakes, but no stiffeners.

The original pads are the killer in price because of the special Inconel backing plates. The Vette brakes or Duntov Motor units are close in price and one of the aftermarket guys sells a pad in twin pin config (I would have to look them up). I have an original set that I want to keep and will use eventually when it is my last hurrah! But I have one other used set at 75% life and a bunch of the Vette brake units and a few sets where I used the original backing plates and sent them to Porterfield awhile back ago! He passed away here recently, so I don't know who is minding the store! The Vette Brake twin pin calipers are far from J-56, they just basically cut the pin mount off and drill two holes. I have a set of fronts from them, that I haven't sold yet. I might put them on my 1968 and still thinking as to their fate. Some guy was selling 8 pads, plus these calipers for $175, so I got the calipers for more than free basically.

From Alan at Duntov, I bought one used up set of J-56 backing plates and took them to Porterfield who was a Corvette guy and he smiled and knew instantly what to do with them, kind of like mind linking! He would burn them out and repad them, but I am not sure if anyone is there still, that would instantly smile if you brought them in like I used to. Thus I would call them!

Case in point on J-56 in general, all of the front counter guys at a major Corvette Retail outfit off of the 5 freeway around Anaheim. When I brought J-56 parts into their store. After they looked at them, they told me that they only sold Corvette parts in there store. Thus I walked out the front door and around the building to the service bays, got one of the smart guys who sourced a few old race pad spacers and gave me a whole set off long cotters and then walked back out front to the counter guys telling them to ring me up for my Corvette parts and that I get 20% off because they are stupid!

I painted all of my J-56 parts a bright Brake caliper red, so when the masses looks at the car, they can see them (not that most would know they were J-56). I had a number of individuals point them out as non-stock parts. And the purist in the know hate my red color.

Default J-56

Does anyone know the correct length of the cotter pins for a J-56 setup? The set we have is 5+3/4 inches long---so they stick out more than 2 inches and the restorer that is doing the work thinks they are too long.

I'd like to purchase another correct set---any ideas??

Need J-56 brake lines also.

Thanks, Jon

I don't know what the correct length of the is, but Long Island Corvette sells the correct cotter pins. They're $20 for the set of 4.
