Default Bumper Support Instalation

Hopefully this isn't the dumbest question that I've asked here.

Almost all of the rear bumper reinforcement bars were missing from my 73. A couple were obviously missing and I replaced them soon after I got it, but the ones from the vertical portion of each bumper to the frame wasn't obvious to me.

I now have the brackets and it isn't obvious to me how to instal the bolt inside the bumper. Does it need to come off?

Any lues would be appreciated.

The bumper braces attach to the frame as in the AIM diagram. The bumper is attached with the bolt from the outside of the bumper through the bumper, body, to the brace inside.

My brace inside to the body and bumper.

The outside bolt that the bumper is attached with.

Yes, I would remove the bumper to install the vertical support. It would be the easiest way.
Hope this helps you some.

If it's the two rods that go down to the vertical points of the rear (item 15 on that diagram), they sneak through the slots just under Donnie's pic

They can be put on with the bumper in place, with some screwing around, easier if you take them off.

Thanks guys, just what I needed to get this done. Once I had the pic and knew that the bumper had to come off first, this was pretty easy.

Kind of funny. While I was taking the bumper off, my son was holding it and I was under the car looking up and what do I see by his hand?

Looks to have been there for quite some time.

Once you see the AIM diagram it makes things clearer as to how it all fits together. That was one of the first things I bought when I started working on my car.

good luck on the continued restoration.

The AIM I have. The order of operations is what I couldn't quite fathom. As Mooser suggested, I assumed that there was a way of doing this with the bumper in place and I'm still not sure how to do that. It wasn't easy to tighten up the bolt with a ratcheting wrench through that small slot.

And thanks for the well wishes on my never ending restoration
