When I bought my 1980 Coupe it came with a nicely rebuilt extra compressor and the belt to the compressor that is installed has been removed. I assumed the compressor was bad and want to get the AC repaired now. My local mechanic is giving me some grief because it is a R12 versus R134 which means some conversions and he said a different type compressor. I do not mind spending the money but what is the best way to approach this repair?
from what I've read, stay with the R-12 on these cars, the system is marginal at best and with 134A they typically don't do to well cooling. if your system is in good shape, put the rebuilt compressor on it and put a vacuum on it for a while to check for leaks, then get some R-12 and get it going, it's expensive but available and the better way to go.
Thanks for the reply. That sounds like a good way to get it working again. I will look for other AC repair places in the area and see if I can get them to do that.
I'm missing something. Why would your mechanic give you grief about R12? All C3s had R12 systems. Any automotive AC shop can convert your stock system to R134 if that's the way you want to go.
First estimate on AC repair is $1200 for everything and he will use the R12 gas because it would work better than a conversion. I will get one more estimate early next week and go with the best one.
