... but I don't know what this thing is? I bought this 68 already disassembled so I never saw what it was hooked up to. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

Looks like the final audio output/amp for the optional stereo radio. The one in your pic may not be specifically for 68 models.
Do you have the assembly instruction manual (AIM)? The AIM shows the installation of the amp in the options section.
