Opening the hood or either door should set it off. Turning it off at the fender key switch will disable it or just unhook the battery to silence it till you figure what's wrong.
Can you unplug it at the trumpet and hook up a meter to the wires? When you trigger it, if it blinks 12 volts you know its working. If not go from there. At least it would be quiet.
I am afraid to try my car alarm. What if it won't shutoff? '75 vert. What will actually trigger the alarm?
I had to laugh out loud at this statement since this is the exact reason why I haven't tried mine out yet. I do like the "disconnecting the trumpet" idea.
Maybe stick a rag in the horn so it's not so loud.
Just make sure you get the right "horn". It's not the one (or dual horns) behind the front grill. It's located under the car below the rear storage compartments.
My '75 still works great.
And does anybody know if lifting the car, as in towing it away will set off the alarm too?

Not sure about the '75, but my '76 uses the door key for the fender key hole. I tried it last fall and heard a faint sound and smelled smoke, looked at the trumpet horn and it was smoking! I unhooked the horn and removed it - it was full of rust and is useless. I'm looking for another horn and will probably pick one up at Carlisle next month.
I was thinking I could use a regular horn like the ones behind the grille, but figured the sound wouldn't be the same as it should.
Reminds me of when I first got my car. 11 pm driving in a residential area ... toot toot toot toot toot toott.... so I stopped and reset the alarm. 2 minutes later - toot toot toot toot toot .... I stopped and reset the alarm and disconnected it when I got home. I don't trust it anymore.
I don't mean to hijack your thread Punisher, for fear of punishment, but I bought a 75 parts car (body actually) and the door locks used a key I found in amongst the mess. The same key works the alarm barrel that came with it. It's a genuine GM key, and it's the roundish one. Sound right?
