Going to work on the motor of my 1976/L48.........need help on what cam shaft to put in...The car is not a daily driver/do not race it either....Looking for advice on what would make the motor sound great, but not over the top or break the bank......
Thanks
I have a Comp Cams XE 274 H in my 4 speed 73 Vette and I love it I have a 383 with big heads (.202 intakes shaved and ported), Edelbrock Performer intake and carb with headers I also have a Comp Cams XE 262 H in my 327 El Camino and all it has is an Edelbrock intake 600 Carb and headers. The heads are the small valve heads ( .194 intakes) and I have a Turbo 350 behind it and I love it. Great sound pulls really strong and you can drive it all day in traffic.
Are you doing anything else to the engine other than a camshaft? I think Skips cam would be a little much for a stock engine. I have a XR 288 HR. but it requires higher compression than a stock engine, plus lots of other work. Sounds awesome though. My wife thinks its awful, said it sounds like an angry bear. Its music to my ears.
What I would do is fire off an email to comp cams or whoevers camshaft company that you like and tell them exactly what you have done to your engine and ask for a camshaft recommendation.
I told my engine builder what I wanted my engine to do and left the rest to him. A good professional engine guy knows what works and what doesn't.
i have just done engine on my 75 l48
I went all Edelbrock performer rpm, heads cam manifold and carby
I wanted to keep my block and my friend has machine shop so he did boring etc,and flat top pistons.Love it worth doing all
Looking for the correct headers for my 76....I have a set on now that are 18" long and they are too long..I have ground clearance issues and basically look like crap, hanging down so low.....I have measured what could be the correct length and that appears to be 15"...Any information would be greatly appreciated.
A hundred bucks. Old skool grind, easy on the valve train (I'd scare up some el cheapo z28 valve springs for it, though). Should have just a hint of a rumpity-rump idle. And it'll make power in a use-able power range.

this would work well if the cam is all you are going to do
When you say "work on the motor" just what does that mean? How much work you're going to do really controls what cam goes in. Personally, I would spend the money to upgrade to a roller cam conversion. Years and years ago when I built a smallblock I always regretted not doing it. Worth what it costs, along with a set of roller rockers.
