I have installed a full Clarion system utilizing a USB connection as well as a MP3 connection. The small remote also is a plus. Sounds great and looks good as well. Al

If you use the search function you will find about 10,000 posts on stereo equipment even though a corvette is probably the worst place in the world to listen to music. I've never seen a post someone said "I bought it 'cus it had great acoustics!"
...I'm considering a C3, and it occurred to me the music technology in the car will be very outdated. I believe to AM/FM radio only?...
No disrespect, but everything on the car will be out dated as far as today's technology. Your concern should be for an operable stock radio in the center cluster. By 82 you could get them with cassette; CB was an option. Stereo was always available.
I'm currently about to do the "UPGRADE"
(Reason? original owner had a "Stereo-shop" in Sc Cal do a Kenwood "upgrade in 1980 and it was a total amature job once you looked in behind the face-plate)
I would suggest:
1. USB capable
2. Satellite capable
Has anyone ever installed/used a modern stereo or mp3 system? How it'd work?
Lot's of stereo install information on the forum.
I installed a good system in my '73 and I'm very happy with it. Kenwood CD head unit driving 4" x 6" Boston Acoustics dash mounted speakers. 4 channel Kenwood Class D amp. Two channels bridged to drive an 8" subwoofer. The other two channels are driving Boston Acoustic 6.5" speakers mounted in the kick panels. These are the main speakers. The dash speakers are set to provide a bit of voice/midrange fill and are faded out some to eliminate harshness from reflecting off the windshield. The head unit has a rear mounted iPod jack. Sounds great.
There are a lot of speaker choices that will fit in the kick panel location but you have to pull the kick panel and measure the pocket behind it. The speaker magnet needs to fit in that pocket. There is a lip on the pocket that can be cut off for a little more room (at least there was on my '73). For best speaker choices, you'll end up having to cut the kick panels and mount the speakers on the surface. You can find speakers to hide behind the kick panels entirely but that limits your options and the sound.
I purchased one of these Sony units and will be hooking it up with my existing radio along with an additional amp and possibly 4 - 6x9 speakers mounted into a custom speaker box behind the seats in the storage area.
I'm not overly concerned about front speakers as they wouldn't make much difference from a sound perspective as they would have to be quite small to work in the stock location in the foot well.
If you like more bass then you could go with 1 or 2 subs and 2 - 6x9 or a set of 6" or 5-1/4"components in the custom box.
The C3 is not an ideal sound environment to begin with.
