Hi all. I bought new 3 point seat belts for my 78 L48. Was supposed to be exact retro fit. However, 2 of the 3 bolt holes will not except the original shoulder bolts. They are too small. I've burned up a few drill bits trying to make them work. I really don't want to grind down the shoulder bolts, as that would leave almost no shoulder. Any idea what type of drill bit I need to drill these out? Thanks for your input.
Mike
Not sure if you are using a smaller to larger size when using your drill bits. Best thing to do is use the step up method when drilling it out. Start slightly larger then step your way through the various sizes till you get the size hole you need. Starting at the size you need in some hardened steel will burn up the drill bits.
Use lots of oil and a slow speed when drilling than the drill bits will not fry. Faster is not always better when drilling into steel. Motor oil works just fine and will smoke when drilling.
Another thought is Purchase some Titanium drill bits to make your way through the steel.
Sounds like you bought Chinese made brand "Retrobelt USA" that don't have the correct size hole of .605". You'll need to use a Step drill bill, 2 hole sizes larger in a drill press. The anchor end will be too small also.
