Default explain why LED conversion loses backup light

Forgive me I've read the old posts on LED conversions and haven't found an answer. So can someone explain why a led conversion has to lose the backup light.

I would also like to know the answer. I know there are other solutions like license plate LED backups so what is it about the normal backup lenses that is different?

I'm not sure what conversion you're referring to, but I don't know why the backup lenses & bulbs would have to be replaced.

I wanted to keep the stock look on mine, so I created my own.

Thats one example. There are other direct swaps available on that famous auction site. I don't want to fabricate my own because I'll butcher it up I'm sure and I have to get new taillights anyway. I just figured some vendor would have a direct swap kit that keeps the backup lights. I haven't found one so I'm curious why they can't do it without sacrificing the backups.

LED is just a light. You could use LED bulbs.

I'm a little confused on what you are asking about.

1157, From Superbright

1156 Backup light.

Ah, I thought you meant a conversion requires eliminating the backups. You could opt to change only the outers and leave the backups as-is, but I know that's not a desirable solution.

I couldn't find a readily available solution either, this is why I built my own.

Ok, so if I keep the stock housings then 1157(6)-style LED lights can be installed directly in place of the stock incandescents?

Yes, but the issue is will it be enough light.

You will have to experiment with them as there are many options.

I have some multi SMD in other car for the dash lights and it worked great.

See this thread. http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c3-g...led-halos.html

He used the 3w single point 1157 LED from superbright but made a change for the running light. Seems bright enough to me in the video with the flashers on.

Thanks for that ddawson. Yes I've read that thread. I might go ahead and experiment with the current taillight housings, as I said they need to be replaced anyway but at over $200 for a set I was considering going with a plug-n-play LED replacement with new housings.

However, the individual LEDs are cheap and I found some on the famous auction site that are sold as taillight/brake light/turn/backup lights so maybe they are bright enough.

Maybe even experiment with halos.
