I am well into my C3 rebuild and thought that I would replace the original engine mounts while I was going as the old ones look a little shabby and possibly cracked.
Question is, is it preferable to replace them with the original style locking (correct) mounts or replace them with the polyurethane mounts? Not much difference in price, but I wondered if the poly mounts are too rigid. The new engine is a 340HP 383 Stroker.
depends on what your primary use of the car is, if it's a street cruiser that rarely sees HARD accelerations, then go with the rubber mounts, they transfer less vibration to the frame/body.
if your going to be racing or doing alot of hard pulls, then get the urethane and sacrifice some comfort in lieu of performance.
I agree. I have OEM-styled interlocking on mine and though it accumulates a lot of street and highway miles, every time I've asked it to perform, the mounts are never an issue.
I run the urethane mounts in mine and they're fine. About 10 years ago I was running a blown L-82 and I was breaking the rubber mounts all of the time so I went to urethane.
I had a bad one when I bought my '76. When I put my foot into it I could hear this strange grinding sound. Turned out to be the engine lifting and putting the fan into the fan shroud. I was able to see wear on the shroud and shiny metal on the fan blades.
Get the locking type mounts, poly or otherwise. If the mount tears and the engine moves up under hard acceleration, your fan will go into the shroud and the upper radiator neck will be torn off the radiator.

There are three different types of mounts available, rubber, poly, or solid metal.
The rubber mounts will crack over time, the poly mounts may possibly melt if you have a high heat engine, and the solid mounts transmit engine vibration to the frame.
Each has it's possible weakness. I went with poly on my engine, but will need to see if I experience a melting problem or not.
If they melt then I will change over to the solid mounts, I would rather not install rubber mounts as my engine is highly modified and the stock rubber mounts won't perform as needed.
and the solid mounts transmit engine vibration to the frame.
Could be that if you put two solid mounts this may be an issue. All the torque for acceleration is pulling on the left mount and compressing the right mount. Rubber on the right probably dampens these vibrations. Poly I don't know, but it is much stiffer than rubber.

Like I mentioned above I don't have any vibration issues with the poly mounts. However, I wished now that I had installed the locking mounts like gcusmano74 mentions. My poly mounts look nice and clean but the rubber mounts I replaced were locking. The driver's side rubber mount was torn in two pieces and the locking feature did prevent addition damage.
